Now GMail in Hindi (,Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam)

Google just announced support for 5 Indian languages in GMail. This was a much awaited feature as Indic transliteration has been available in blogger and Orkut for more than an year now.

When you compose a new mail in Gmail, you should now see an icon with an Indian character, as the screenshot below shows. This feature is enabled by default for Gmail users in India. If you do not see this function enabled by default, you will need to go the "Settings" page and enable this option in the "Language" section.

When you click the Indian languages icon, you can type words the way they sound in English and Gmail will automatically convert the word to its Indian local language equivalent.

Technorati launches new crawler

http://technorati.com/weblog/2009/02/473.html

The time has come to retire the original Technorati crawler. ... added a lot better coverage of many new blogging conventions, better visibility and tracking of what is happening in the internals of the crawler, and how to do a better job of recognizing all the great content bloggers are discussing and linking to.

Google makes users Information Security Aware

Google has started prompting users if they have been using weak passwords, to change them. This is a good move considering that so many of us are now:
  • using GMail for sensitive communications
  • our Google calendars store information about us and others (like say friend's birthdays)
  • our Google docs accounts might have so much sensitive material in them
  • and finally our Google Search history can be stored and if mined could tell so much about us
This is a welcome move - I hope we the users pay attention and change our passwords if they are weak.
