However, they may wish - it will be very difficult for FB and MS to give Google a competition. More so by making the service "invitation only" is going to cost much dearer and I am sure the move could even boomerang!

Invitation only works if your launching a new (read:novel) service - not if you are simply rehashing an old service already provided by others. Many would give the GMail example - but dude GMail was not just an email - it was (when launched) the first 1GB mailbox (so it was novel in that sense).
